My Admiration for Poets
Growing up, all I thought of poetry was that it was rhyming words. As someone who spent a lot of my pre-teen years writing song lyrics, I’d also dabble in poetry, rhyming the last word in every second and fourth sentence because that’s all I knew how to do.
As I’ve gotten older and stumbled upon poet after poet, all the different variations of poetry and the way they let the words so intricately flow in an engaging piece, I’m filled with so much admiration for the writers behind them.
Rhyming or not, the way a poet can take a subject and describe it in such a unique, thoughtful and beautiful way is awe-inspiring. I’m sometimes left baffled at how someone could even write so seemingly effortlessly; how the perfect words come out from their soul and onto the paper.
Poetry, beyond anything else, makes you feel. Whether it’s a whimsical haiku or a bewitching free verse or a heartwarming sonnet, every poet’s poem comes from the heart.
And if they can make their feelings rhyme, hats off to them.
Now, I’ll leave you with some lines from my favorite poem I’ve ever written called “Angel,” written at age 16.
You’ve got a sense of goodness
And all the confidence in the world
You’re intelligent and you use it
Out of the rocks, you are that pearl
You must have your wings hidden
And the halo stored away
Your first home must have been Heaven
But I’m glad you’re here today
I know you probably don’t see it
You look at things from a different angle
But you know that I believe it
Boy, you are an angel
